Protecting Canada's Natural Legacy for Future Generations

In 2010 the previous government committed to protecting 10% of our marine and coastal areas by 2020. For years no real progress was made.

Over the past three years the Federal Liberal government has worked tirelessly to meet this goal and I am so proud of the fact that as of today we will not just meet it, but significantly exceed it (13.8%).

The Tuvaijuittuq Marine Protected Area and Tallurutiup Imanga National Marine Conservation Area are very special places. Unique to this protected area is the agreement with the local Inuit people which ensures a consensus-based approach to management of the area, as well as much needed investments in small harbours, and community infrastructure. This is about showing how a “conservation economy” can work.

Based on this example, I believe we can do more in protecting our special places, while ensuring people have jobs and fulfilling lives.
